Im Studio hatte Konitz sich mit einer Auswahl herausragender, aber ganz unterschiedlicher Musiker verabredet: vom Dixieland-Posaunisten Marshall Brown über den Cool-Jazz-Saxofonisten Richie Kamuca bis zum Ex-Coltrane-Schlagzeuger Elvin Jones, vom Ellington-Geiger Ray Nance über die klassischen Modernisten Dick Katz (Klavier) und Jim Hall (Gitarre) bis zum Free-Jazz-Vibrafonisten Karl Berger. Mit dem Saxofonisten Joe Henderson und dem Bassisten Eddie Gomez waren seinerzeit auch zwei aufstrebende Jungstars dabei. Nacheinander spielte Konitz mit ihnen verschiedene Duette ein und vereinte schließlich alle Musiker zu einem gemeinsamen Ensemblestück. Konitz selbst bläst auf der Platte erstmals auch Tenorsaxofon sowie das elektrische Varitone. In den "Milestones" wird er in Interviewausschnitten selbst zu Wort kommen.
